Color and ambience:

Most apartments and dorm rooms come with standard-issue white walls. Boring! Want to add some color, without much hassle? Christmas lights. Truly, there is no easier way to change the color, look, and feel of a room than by using these lights. They’re simple to hang: you can just tack them up around the border of your room’s ceiling. Put all red lights up, and your room will appear to have a red hue to it. You can even put up more than one color, and choose which set to plug in. Blue today, green tomorrow. It’s simple and affordable. To further add to the effect, you can switch the bulbs in some of your lamps to colored “party bulbs.”

Since a lot of emo kids like to have ambient lighting, this is a perfect choice. Even plain white Christmas lights can change the look of a room, without providing too much light.

Floors:

Do you have boring floors? Ugly tiles or nasty carpet? No problem. Buying an area rug can be expensive as anything… but many stores sell large, but affordable bath mats that you can use as smaller area rugs. It may sound strange, but there are plenty of stylish, large bathmats out there to choose from, including ones made of fake fur. Bonus: they’re meant to be slip-proof, and tend to be easier to clean if they get wet than an area rug.

Further, a DIY/punk type could easily buy and cut what is known as remnant carpet to either carpet smaller rooms or to make their own area rugs. The whole idea is to be creative!

Futons:

Did you inherit an old futon that isn’t the nicest ever? Futon covers are expensive, but you can find bed sheets that fit the futon for significantly less money. At “mall punk” stores, the average emo or punk kid could find all kinds of neat things, like Nightmare Before Christmas sheets… and even in the kids’ sections of regular stores, there are plenty of interesting and cute things. Halloween is a great time to seek out things like spider webs and pumpkins; Valentine’s day is great for hearts. Be creative! Throw blankets – usually cheap and made of fleece, are an affordable option to finish out your fun, personalized futon. Oh, and pillows! Don’t forget the pillows! You can usually find them for affordable prices [along with pillowcases of your choice] at major discount stores.

Your kitchen:

Craft store, craft store, craft store! I can’t stress this enough! You can find all kinds of things cheap and ready to customize, at almost any craft store. Storage tins, jars, and containers can be customized to hold anything from spoons and spatulas to food items or napkins. These stores, as well as major discount stores, also usually have affordable towels – though the holidays are a great time to stock up on ones you like. Craft foam can be used to make kitchen [or dining room] place mats – and you can customize them however you want, to boot!

Furniture

While you’re at the craft store, you may notice some unpainted, boring wooden furniture. Or maybe you’ll hit a thrift store and find some hideous looking, but functional, furniture. Your easy solution? Paint. Just buy some paint and sealant [that part is important; it will protect the paint] and make furniture that suits your needs and personality. Want a purple dresser? There’s nothing stopping you! You can paint your DIY furniture with a brush, or en try different techniques, like stencils or sponges, to get different effects or multiple hues.

General supplies:

If you are going to get into alternative and DIY home design, it is important to have some basic supplies:

It is always good to have a bucket and strong cleaner on hand, just in case something spills.

If you’re painting furniture or other items, an inexpensive drop cloth is a good idea. You can use a cheap plastic table cloth or shower curtain liner for this.

Pencils are good for sketching out designs, marking tack holes, or for jotting down measurements. Scissors and a sharp utility blade should also be in your bare basics kit, as should glue. A hot glue gun is great for decorating, especially if you will be adding things like jewels or stones to items [such a plain storage boxes or canisters]. A hot glue gun can also be used for small repairs on wooden items.

In the end, when it comes to having an alternative looking apartment or dorm, without spending money, the trick is to look to the DIY punk and emo ethic and be creative. Once you tap into your creativity, there is really no limit to what you can do!

- For the Outdoor Lover

For those who seek an outdoor feel in their own home, try the following option. Purchase a large piece of burlap tailored to fit a specific portion of your wall. Using starch as an adhesive, apply the burlap to the wall. If the burlap pulls away from the wall in any place, add more starch until the piece lay completely flat against the wall. Since burlap already has several small holes throughout, you may now hook on any decor you wish such as large fishing lures. Additionally, place nails or brackets along the burlap to hang that mounted trophy bass, a straw hat, or various furs. This is the month of October which brings us Halloween, ghosts, ghouls and scares. Perhaps, when we bury our old mattresses we should be concerned that they are going to rise from the ground and walk the earth like mattress zombies scouring the Earth for restless sleepers like us . Perhaps your old mattress is looking for you like the zombie out of a Halloween thriller. Maybe there is a better way though of disposing our old mattresses that’s more green friendly rather than burying them. That way they won’t be possessed with the idea of coming to find us.

Many civic leaders and environmentalist have come to the same conclusion that disposing of large bulky items that can’t decompose into a landfill just isn’t the solution. So what are some of the options we have for discarding our old mattresses? If your mattress is perhaps five years old or less and is still in new or close to new condition then it should be recommended to ask family or friends if they can use your mattress. Explain how much you paid for it and tell them you’d rather see someone you know be able to use it rather than discarding it. You’d be surprised how many people may have a mattress on its last leg and may jump at an opportunity to replace it with a more modern mattress.

Perhaps your family and friends are happy with their mattresses (which is good) and just can’t find a use for yours. If this is the case why not considering donating your mattress to one of the many charitable organizations or non-profit organizations out there. Companies like Goodwill or Salvation Army are often happy to accept lightly used mattresses that they can use in their own programs or offer them for sale through their stores to raise money for the different programs they offer for your community. It’s not scary at all to drop off your old mattress to the different drop off locations. Who knows, perhaps your mattress will find a new home and live again.

There are also manufacturers who take old mattresses and use the old steel spring components and anything else that can be recycled to make new reconditioned mattresses. With the price of steel and foams climbing many of these businesses are able to recycle old mattresses and re-introduce new components into them to make a new mattress. These mattresses feature yellow law labels sewn into them and are companies like these accept and often will pick up old mattresses for these components. Typically only found in larger metropolitan areas these manufacturers or local shops help to find new life for your old mattress which will keep it out of a landfill. Recycled and reconditioned mattresses won’t have bugs or other crawling creatures come out of them like some scary Halloween thriller. They are specially sanitized and cleaned before being returned to the general public for sale again but have new life breathed into them.

Many city waste processing centers are starting to recycle old mattresses by taking the steel out of them and scrapping it and melting it down as well. Not all do this but many are again due to the high cost of steel. You can contact your local city waste pickup center and ask them if they recycle. Metal scrap yards might also be a great place for recycling your mattress rather than introducing it into a landfill.

In this article I brought out the fact that landfills have long been mattress graveyards by mattresses being placed into landfills and buried by tons of trash and waste. There are alternatives to this and include donating your mattress to companies like Goodwill or the Salvation Army. Having them picked up by local manufacturers who recycle them into new reconditioned mattresses. There is always the choice too of having them picked up by your local waste or recycling center which can use the steel and other materials out of the mattress which will reduce what goes into landfills.

Hopefully if you’re considering disposing of a mattress you can find a better home for it than having it get buried into a graveyard of old mattresses, trash and other waste. If you decide to try to recycle your old mattress than you’re definitely doing you’re part to help be more green and eco-friendly towards our environment. If you decide to just send your old mattress off to a landfill however, beware. Old mattresses in the mattress graveyard have been known to come out at night, looking for restless sleepers with whom to find. As you’re telling ghost stories around that Halloween campfire, watch out behind you. That old mattress may be lurking like an undead zombie in the shadows. Stay alert and make sure you all stay together. Much like our planet’s ecology if we all do our part we’ll hopefully make it through to the sequel.

But what about the trick-or-treaters? Have you come up with a really fun way to get them to be a part of your home display? If you have hutches in your home, we’re going to help you make their Halloween trick-or-treating a scream.

First, consider the look of your hutches. Most hutches have a counter that sticks out a little bit below the shelving portion of the furniture piece. While in a regularly lighted room this looks like a nice piece of furniture, if it’s dark and there are cobwebs hanging from it, it looks like a black hole where anything could be hiding under the first shelf of the hutch.

We’re going to turn your hutches into mystery graveyards.

Start with the shelves. If you have items you can’t take off the shelves, you will at least need to cover them up to make the theme work. If you can remove the items, you have more decorating space. You will want to put foam tombstones and possibly some fake bones of hands or feet sticking off the end of the shelf.

On the counter portion of your hutches, you need to put down a layer of protective material (a garbage bag will do in a pinch), and then cover it with black fabric. On top of this you will need to place a couple of bowls, which can be pushed back to the wall of the hutch (these are going to be your treat bowls).

Now you need to decorate the front of the counter on the hutches with more tombstones, skeleton pieces and anything else that gives a creepy look. Finally drape the whole area with cobwebs.

What you want to have accomplished is an area where the kids will have to reach through the scary graveyard and cobwebs to go to the bowls they can’t see at the back of the hutches to get their candy.

Motion Activated Items

Many stores carry motion activated items these days that are great to add to this theme. They could be items you can set on the shelves or the counter of the hutches or have sitting nearby. All that matters is as the kids try to approach to get their candy, the motion activated toys come to life.

Sounds and Lights

A big part of what makes Halloween spooky is the lights and sounds of the holiday. You should set up your stereo to play a creepy soundtrack and have very dark lighting to make your hutches look even more like a scary place to visit.

Final Touches

If you really want to be a tough venue, you can also mix up the bowls. You can have some of the bowls have treats and others have store bought slime that they may reach their hand into. You can claim it’s the brains of someone who was buried in the cemetery and watch them scream.

See What You Have

Look around your house. Chances are you have plenty of things that can take on another role for Halloween décor, especially those fun items that you could put on accent tables.
